Springtime is one of the most beautiful times of the year. With the weather warming up, baseball season starting, and festivals and events ramping up, the world gets a bit busier when spring time hits. But did you also know that the late winter months and early months of spring are one of the most important times of the year to pay attention to your lawn? By completing some key yard work items, you’ll be able to have a beautiful, thriving lawn all season long. Below we’re uncovering the first 4 tips on how to prep your lawn for spring.
Tip #1: Don’t Start Lawn Prep Too Early
While it might be tempting to start on some light yard work at the first sign of warmer weather, it’s important to be patient and wait. Why? If you spend too much time on your lawn before it fully wakes up, you could run the risk of damaging your lawn which could become a costly mistake down the road.
Tip #2: Remove Lawn Debris
Survey your lawn and pick up any debris that has accumulated over the cold months of winter. If you’re lucky to live where it’s warm all season long, you can take the time to remove items that have accumulated since the last time you’ve done yard work. This debris can include fallen tree branches and the raking of old leaves and/or thatch. Raking and removing of this debris will not only promote air flow throughout your turf but it will also prevent disease, possible insect infestation, and encourage new grass growth.
Looking to remove bigger and heavier items from your yard? Our steel multi-use dump cart is the perfect accompaniment to your spring lawn care prep as it’s able to hold up to 1,200 pounds, and can move on any type of terrain.
Tip #3: Apply Pre-Emergent Crabgrass Control for Crabgrass Prevention
Weeds are annoying, and unfortunately, crabgrass is even worse (and it can grow just about anywhere). What does crabgrass look like? It’s a low-to-the ground, tough weed that has long blades that are bent.
The timing to get rid of crabgrass is extremely important as once it starts to germinate and grow, it’s hard to get rid of. When soil (2-3 inches underground) reaches 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s time to apply pre-emergent herbicides. If you do notice your crabgrass getting out of control, we recommend contacting your local lawn and tree care experts.
Tip #4: Fertilization is Key to a Beautiful Summer Lawn
Why should you fertilize during this time of year? It will help to jump start your yard. Providing a nutrient build-up, fertilization will give your grass the strength it needs to endure both heat stress and drought while staying beautiful and green throughout those hot summer months.
To start this process now, you’ll need to test the pH level in your soil to make sure that the fertilizer will blend well to balance out the acidity and alkalinity that’s naturally found in your soil. From there, you can go to your local hardware store to purchase fertilizer along with the necessary tools to properly apply it. Once you’re done fertilizing your lawn, make sure to practice proper clean up as fertilizer waste can be harmful to the environment.
