We’re back to give you more tips on how to prep your yard for the upcoming spring season. While these tips are in no particular order, we do encourage you to perform them all so your lawn can be healthy and thrive all season long. Read on to learn more spring lawn care tips.
Tip #1: Take Care of Pesky Weeds & Spray for The Future
No matter where you live, you’ll run into weeds. While maintaining a healthy lawn will help to keep them at bay, we can guess that you’ll see a few pops up from time to time. When you do see these weeds, you have two options: pull them or spray. Depending upon the weed type will determine the execution strategy.
Once you’ve removed those weeds, there a few ways to keep them from showing up in the future:
- Mow high (and often)
- Water your lawn the right amount
- Apply preventative sprays such as weed and feed
Tip #2: Don’t Be Alarmed By Damaged Areas
Now that we have you focused on paying attention to your lawn, are you noticing bare patches? Don’t panic! Those patches could be due to pet spots, heavy traffic, or neglect. You can apply grass seed to fill in those areas, however, it’s recommended to do this during the Fall as you’ll have more success (we’ll be covering this topic in detail in our fall lawn care post).
So what can you do right now? Take a mental note on what areas you need to overseed in the fall. You can also “hide” those areas with potted plants, flowers, or outdoor furniture. Need help moving those heavy potted plants and/or lawn furniture? Try one of our dump carts.
Tip #3: Prepare Your Lawn Mower
There’s no time like the present to make sure your lawn mower is in tip-top shape. It can be quite frustrating when your lawn mower doesn’t start up on the day that you’re ready to mow. To avoid this, look at your lawn mower sooner rather than later. Make sure to check the oil, air filter, drive belt, and the blades. This way you can find any potential issues and get your mower fixed before prime mowing season.
Tip #4: Form a Game Plan for Mowing Season
At the most basic level, just pushing your lawn mower to cut the grass does the trick. But did you know that there is a strategy behind lawn mowing? Crafting a good plan can help to cultivate even healthier grass.
When mowing, you’ll want to make sure that you cut at the right height (different times of the year can call for different mow heights). Typically, each time you mow during mowing season you’ll want to make sure that you remove 1/3 off the top of your lawn. This will help to keep weeds from sprouting while also maintaining a nice, clean look for your lawn.
Another mowing technique to incorporate into your plan is to mow in the opposite direction each time you cut your grass. Why? This will encourage healthy growth while also making the grass blades grow straighter.
It’s also important to be flexible. Your yard should be 100% dry and it’s never a good idea to mow in the rain as that will not produce healthy or beautiful results.
